Online Claims
This automated decision making project was truly groundbreaking and even won an award. It is an online claims system. Much more than an on-line data-entry web site for insurance claims, it adjusts routine claims, calculating the compensation to be paid “subject to satisfactory evidence supporting the answers given” and gives the claimant an instant decision.
A conventional insurance claims form has to cover all eventualities on a form limited by practicality to a few pages. Inevitably many questions are asked in general language so as to be appropriate to many circumstances, and answers tend to be correspondingly vague. With online claims each question asked is dependent upon information already collected. The advantages to the claimant are that fewer questions need to be asked and questions are more precise. The advantage to the insurer is that more precise and more relevant is collected.
With an instant decision for routine claims the customer has zero delay and the insurer has a marketing gem.
Software was needed the complex simple. For the insurer a graphical representation of the flow of questions, including decisions of which questions to ask and whether to approve or decline the claim. For the claimant a website that asks one question a time. What could be simpler?
